11 month old won't take a nap longer than a half hour

Posts: 3 09/23/09 10:03:30	Tags : None No matter what I do I can not get my 11 month old to take a nap longer than 30 minutes. It has been like this since he was about 5 months. I have tried to let him cry it out but he cries for longer than he sleeps. I feel like I am watching my kid cry all day because he is always tired an I am always putting him to sleep. For example I put him down for a nap at 9:15 this morning her cried till 9:49 fell asleep and woke up at 10:09. I left him in his crib to see if he would fall back to sleep and he cried till 10:39 when I finally took him out of his crib. By the way he sleeps perfect at night. Last night he was asleep by 8 and he woke up at 7 this morning. Anyone have any solutions to how I can make him take naps. He is tired all day long.

I'm sure Deb our sleep coach will have some answers for you, but I wanted to offer my opinion. If he slept for 11 hours through the night and got up at 7:00 AM, it seems to me that a 9:15 AM nap might be too early. Perhaps pushing it back a little would help. Posts: 3 09/23/09 10:39:11	He was yawning and rubbing his eyes when I put him down. He does this with every nap no matter what time it is. Even if we are in the car he still will only sleep for a half hour. I have tried to put him down at all different times of the day and only a hand full of times has he slept for more than a half hour. Lately it is getting worse and he is only taking 20 minutes naps. He takes 3 20-30 minutes naps but he hasn't seemed refreshed from any sleep in about 2 weeks.

Posts: 80 09/23/09 12:44:36	He is at a deficit of sleep right now and if can't get him the sleep he needs during the day we have to get it at night. I would put him to bed no later than 6pm if he had less than 2 hours of naps in a day and earlier if less than that. Cumulatively the more sleep he gets at night the better he will sleep for those naps. Give it a shot!!!!! Deborah Pedrick - www.familysleep.com

Posts: 3 09/23/09 13:07:56	I have put him down at 6 before but he won't sleep longer than a half hour. What do I do if he wakes up at 6:30-7:00 do I let him cry until he goes back to sleep. Or what if he won't go to sleep that early do I just put him in at 6 and let him cry for however long it takes him to sleep. One more question what if I put him to sleep at 6 and it gets up for the day at like 5

Posts: 80 10/22/09 18:44:47	I know it's been awhile, sorry for the late return on this but since he's overtired, he will cry no matter what changes you implement. We want to get him rested and back to his happy self so then he won't cry when we put him down to sleep. The early early bedtime has a cumulative effect so you have to do it consistently for a period of time. If he were to wake up 1/2 hour later I would try to let him put himself back to sleep and not interfere. He will not get up earlier if he goes to bed earlier . Deborah Pedrick - www.familysleep.com
