Deborah,
My boy is 4 months old. That last month, I started to transition him 1. being out of the swaddle for sleeping as he was breaking out of it, and 2. out of the swing for daytime naps and getting him into his crib. He was on a routine until these changes. Since then he has been harder and harder to put down for naps (and they became 30 minutes) and getting up many times throughout the night. At this point, my husband and I have created a schedule according to his sleep cues and suggestions from the book. He is swaddled for night sleep in his crib, still waking. And he is not swaddled in the swing (on the lowest setting) for naps. He seems to suck his hands quite a bit so my thought is to not swaddle to when we decide to leave him after putting him down for night so he has his hands to self-sooth, but at the same time seems to be more content swaddled. Your suggestions? (He is a little guy for 4 months, about 12 pounds, I know to go to him to feed during the night but its been increasingly more difficult to decipher which is unnecessary waking (want) or for hunger/gas pain (need)) I tried it one night. He was flailing all over the place and cried hard for 1.5 hours. Is that time length acceptable at his age/weight? Maybe he is not developed enough to try teaching him self-soothing at night by leaving him be?
