I have a question about how to get my 6 week old to take her afternoon naps. She will take her morning naps (2) but refuses to take her afternoon naps. I
usually feed her at around 1:30-2:00 and she will not go back to sleep until her bed time at around 7:00. Please help. She is on a 3 hour eating schedule and
is doing great at night waking usually 1-2 times but she is so grouchy and fussy from around 3:00-7:00. How do I fix this?

Hello and welcome sbboan!! Congratulations on your new little girl!!
Fussy babies are no fun. My middle child had his fussy hours right around that time too and I never did figure it out. LOL I just waited til he out grew it.
I'm sure our sleep expert, Deb will have some great advice for you.
I hope to see you on our other message boards too and look forward to getting to know you. Make yourself at home.

Too new to do | #3 | ||
At this age day sleep and night sleep are not organized. So basically what that means is your baby will sleep when she wants to and that we cannot manipulate her sleep habits at this point. If she is fussy do whatever it takes to get her to sleep when she seems tired. Try doing this: after about 30-45 minutes of being awake keep an eye on her and look for her sleepy signs, at that point start doing a soothing routine and then put her down. The duration will vary completely from nap to nap right now so don't think about it as what she "should" be doing because she is doing only what she is capable of doing right now given her immaturity. Also that 3-7pm fussiness will peak at around 8 weeks of age, along with that comes social smiles and her night sleep will become organized. You are almost there so hang in there

Thank you so much for your response. I really needed to hear that!! I do have one more question...At what age do they start organizing their sleep? Thank
you again!
Also, how many naps should she be taking a day?

Day sleep organization | #5
Day sleep starts organizing at around 4 months of age. Basically at around 2 months of age you would keep the intervals of wakefulness ultra short, after about an hour put your baby down to sleep, eventually as your baby gets closer to 4 months you will start seeing a pattern of day sleep, or optimum times your baby sleeps. At that point you will schedule naptimes as opposed to following wakeful periods. Almost there!

My 3-month old won't stay asleep! | #6
|
Hello!
My three-month old sleeps 11 hours at night. My blessings stop there. When she goes down for naps during the day, I almost never have a problem getting her to sleep. She cries for 5 - 10 minutes and falls asleep. But 30 - 40 minutes later, she's up crying again and won't go back to sleep. I wouldn't have a problem if she woke up happy. But she is clearly still tired, and for some reason she can't put herself back to sleep (and neither can mommy). I have heard of sleep transition problems, where the child has difficulty getting from active sleep to deep sleep, and that sounds like what it could be. But I can't find any information online or in books to help me. How do I help my baby stay asleep??? Thank you! |

Lack of maturity | #7 | ||

Her day sleep rhythms are not quite there yet. Night sleep as you know is organized but it might be a couple more weeks until her day sleep comes together.
Short naps are very common and frequent napping. Our only goal at this point is to get her down before she becomes overtired, what she does with the nap and
how long she sleeps is totally up to her. Keep the interval of wakefulness short, about 1-1.5 hours throughout the day. Good job with the bedtime , WOW!!!!!!

Thank you! | #8 | ||

So now it's been over a week and she's already starting to lengthen her naps up to an hour, without any undue effects on the nighttime sleep. Thank
you for your advice and reassurance, it is really helping her!
