Posts: 45 08/01/08 12:01:42	Tags : None Concieve another child in order to save the life of another one of your children? They had sisters on GMA yesterday in which the younger sister was concieved (after the father had a vasectomy reversal) in order to give the older sister bone marrow and save her life (she had I believe leukemia). So if you were in there shoes, exhausted all possible matches for bone marrow and the only way to save your child's life would be by having another child would you do it? I know this was a big controversy back when this happened (1990's) but if I was in the same situation I know I would have done the same thing this family did.

Posts: 69 08/01/08 23:49:41	At this time in my life I would have to say no. That being because another pregnancy would likely be the end of me. My uterus cannot handle another pregnancy. If it weren't so threatening to my life I would probably have another child to save one of my children.

Posts: 34 08/02/08 23:07:48	I would definitely do it. If I remember correctly, they can use the cord blood from the baby, so it they wouldn't have to extract marrow the way they would from any other donor.

Posts: 14 08/06/08 14:59:44	I think I would!! I would make sure the child never felt they were only here to help save the sibling........but that indeed they were a miracle in more than one way. More importantly I would make sure that they felt it wasn't their fault if it DIDN'T work. OMG, could you imagine how that could impact their life? If they couldn't save their sibling? I hope I NEVER have to make such a difficult decision like this.

Posts: 31 08/09/08 12:50:29	I would, in fact my former grade 2 teacher is doing this right now at the age of about 48. Her son Ben has leukemia and his little sister wasn't a match. I know for a fact that she had always wanted another child, but her son was diagnosed when her daughter was very young and so things happened and they never did. She's actually going through a proceedure where they'll chosen the embryo that matches her son to implant and is very angry that she wasn't told of this sooner since the chances of it working are dramatically lower at her age. I guess my only thing with this is, with all the new technology people are basically being able to choose what child they welcome into the world and while its understandable in situations like this ~ modern medicine always seems to push the ethical boundaries too far IMHO.

Posts: 3 08/14/08 02:40:23	As much as I DON'T want another child, I would do it in a heart beat- because I can't imagine loosing another child. I lost my godson and regret the unstoppables everyday. HOWEVER I read a great book, My sister's keeper- So I also think I would make pre-set limitations as to when enough would be enough.... I don't want the "healthy" child's life having to always be ill and in surgery and procedures as if I had two children on the verge of death if that makes sence.

I went to lunch with my mom today an she was telling me that a guy at her job has a son of 2yo that has leukemia. His wife is pregnant (happened before finding out that their son was ill) and they now are able to help DS#1. I just think that is amazing.

There, the couple had an IVF and had all the embryos tested to choose the one that best matched the sick sibling as a doner. Also, they requested to have a girl as they already had two sons. The latter was greatly critisised... I think it's hard if you're only born because you're needed as a doner (all these couples wouldn't have wanted another child if the sibling hadn't been so ill). It's kind of unethical. But yes, I'd do it too, if the life of any of my kids was at stake. I'd just hope that the new child wouldn't suffer when learning about their reason to be born in later life.

Posts: 46 08/15/08 20:30:54	Oh yes. In a heartbeat. We've actually discussed this, and we feel the same way as Marissa. If that's God's will, we feel that it would be his way of telling us. We discussed the fact we wouldn't mind having another one if we needed to to save Konnor. On the note of questioning whether I was born to save a sibling, I honestly think it would be a source of pride for me. I don't know because I'm not in the situation, but I think that if a parent loves a child enough to have another to save it, wouldn't that parent love the second child just as much for saving the first? I may be wrong, but that's how I feel about it :)

Posts: 32 08/16/08 00:20:06	I have yet to experience the love that a parent has for a child because I don't have children yet, however, what I feel for my BFF's daughter and son and for my nephew is already abundant and I can't imagine not having another child to save the ailing one! Lord willing I must say it would be a no brainer from my side of things.
